Director of the University Writing Program
The LSU English Department is actively seeking a creative, experienced writing program administrator to direct a forward-looking program fully integrated into LSU’s general education curriculum. The University Writing Program has recently been re-structured to include a single-semester writing course in the first year to be followed by an advanced course in the second (see http://www.lsu.edu/uwp/ ). The program normally enrolls approximately 5000 students annually and has an established program-wide assessment for both courses in the sequence. The position is tenure-track at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.
The University Writing Program is characterized by a stable staff well-integrated into the English Department. Writing courses are taught by professors, graduate students, and full-time instructors. A hallmark of our instructor ranks is a carefully monitored system of review and promotion dating back to the 1980s, a procedure in which our senior instructors fully participate. Our graduate students receive training in writing pedagogy before their teaching begins and during their first semester of teaching, as well as mentoring while they are teaching. In addition to benefiting from this strong teaching core, the University Writing Program works closely with the Communication Across the Curriculum program and the LSU Writing Center.
The English Department is one of eleven “Foundations of Excellence” programs at LSU, a designation that means the department benefits from targeted resource allocations from the university.
Required Qualifications: Earned doctoral degree in Rhetoric and Composition, English, or related field; expertise in directing a large-scale writing program; evidence of innovation and excellence in teaching and research. Additional desired qualifications: expertise in composition theory, experience in graduate student training and faculty development, and experience with program assessment.
An offer of employment is contingent on a satisfactory pre-employment background check. Screening begins October 31, 2009, and will continue until a candidate is selected. Interviews will be conducted at the Modern Language Association Convention in Philadelphia, PA, December 27-30, 2009. Applications will be acknowledged in writing.
